About NICU
At University Hospital Sharjah (UHS), the Pediatrics and Neonatology Department provides complete medical care for infants, children, and adolescents. Our pediatricians and neonatologists manage everything from routine check-ups and vaccinations to complex medical conditions.
We offer advanced neonatal intensive care for premature and critically ill newborns, along with specialized pediatric clinics across multiple subspecialties.
Growth monitoring, preventive screenings, and evidence-based treatment plans ensure safe, effective care for every child. Supported by skilled nurses and allied health professionals, our approach is clinically advanced and centered around the needs of each family.
Symptoms
The following symptoms should never be ignored and may indicate the need for evaluation or admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU):
Difficulty Breathing or Rapid Breathing
Labored, irregular, or unusually fast breathing can signal respiratory distress or underlying lung or heart conditions requiring urgent medical care.
Poor Feeding or Weight Gain Issues
Infants who struggle to feed effectively, refuse feeds, or fail to gain adequate weight may have underlying metabolic, gastrointestinal, or developmental concerns.
Persistent Jaundice or Abnormal Skin Color
Yellowing of the skin or eyes beyond the normal newborn period, or bluish/pale skin, may point to liver dysfunction, blood disorders, or oxygenation problems.
Seizures, Lethargy, or Poor Responsiveness
Unusual jerking movements, excessive sleepiness, or weak responses can indicate neurological or metabolic conditions that require immediate evaluation.
Fever or Signs of Infection in Infants Under 3 Months
Even a mild fever in very young infants can be a sign of serious infection and must be assessed without delay.
