About Shock Wave Lithotripsy
Shock wave lithotripsy is a non-invasive treatment used to break kidney stones into smaller pieces so they can pass naturally through the urinary system.
The procedure uses focused shock waves delivered from outside the body to break the stones without surgical incisions. In many cases, general anesthesia is not required. Shock wave lithotripsy is usually performed as a day procedure, allowing patients to go home the same day. It is commonly used to treat kidney and ureteral stones that are smaller than 2 centimeters.
At University Hospital Sharjah, our urology team evaluates each patient carefully to determine whether shock wave lithotripsy is the most appropriate treatment.
Symptoms
If you're experiencing any of the following symptoms, it may indicate the presence of kidney or urinary tract stones, and you could be a candidate for shock wave lithotripsy in Sharjah:
Sharp or sudden pain in the side or lower back
This is a classic sign of kidney stones, especially if the pain comes in waves.
Blood in the urine (hematuria)
Stones can irritate the urinary tract lining, causing visible or microscopic bleeding.
Burning or painful urination
Stones near the bladder or urethra may lead to discomfort during urination.
Nausea or vomiting alongside abdominal or flank pain
These symptoms can accompany the intense pain caused by stones moving through the urinary tract.
